Homeowners are URGENTLY advised to inspect their properties for Serene bathroom heaters for a heater recall alert as certain models may pose a fire hazard and risk of property damage.
Potential fire hazards linked to certain Serene bathroom heater models have been identified by WorkSafe’s Energy Safety team. It has been determined that model S2068 poses a safety risk, while models S207T and S2069 do not meet required safety standards.
As of January 2025, there have been 19 fire incidents involving the Serene S2068 model. With an estimated 28,000 recalled units still present in homes across New Zealand, this number may increase.
We encourage you to inspect any wall-mounted bathroom heaters in your home for the recall a on properties. If they are Serene-branded, please refer to the guidance provided below.

Background:
It’s estimated that approximately 44,000 Serene S2068 bathroom heaters were sold and installed across New Zealand between 2018 and 2023.
After several fire incidents, WorkSafe launched an investigation into the S2068 model and found it did not comply with New Zealand’s safety standards. This led to a prohibition on its sale and use, followed by a compulsory recall issued by the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs in 2024.
By February 2025, around 16,000 units had been returned with the help of electricians and plumbing professionals nationwide. However, reports of house fires linked to the 28,000 remaining units continue to surface.
WorkSafe also reviewed the Serene S207T and S2069 models, finding safety issues with those units as well, though the risks were considered less severe.
The manufacturer, Serene Industries, is no longer active in New Zealand. Consequently, suppliers and businesses are now managing the removal or replacement of affected heaters, as required under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

What to do if you have these heaters
Stop using the heater immediately.
If you bought the heater through a retailer or supplier, reach out to them to arrange its removal. In some cases, they may organise an electrician to handle the disconnection. You can also ask about a safe replacement (if available) or request a refund.
If you are renting, speak with your landlord to agree on the next steps.
If your heater is plugged into a wall socket: turn off the power at the socket, unplug the unit, and remove it. Make sure to dispose of the heater safely so it cannot be reused under any circumstances.
If the heater is hardwired into your home and you’re unsure who supplied it: contact a qualified electrician to remove it safely at your own cost. Do not attempt to disconnect it yourself. (An electrician is much cheaper than potentially an uninsured house)
